Metropolitan Government of Nashville & Davidson County: Centennial Park Improvements

The project was an improvement of two separate areas within Centennial Park in Nashville with the following main components:

(a) Cockrill Spring Zone. This is a 6.5-acre area fronting on West End Avenue. Work included the reconstruction of the historic perimeter wall, day lighting of existing Cockrill Spring and creating a surface pool and water feature, Cockrill Spring Plaza, permanent seating for Musicians Corner integrated into the landscape, construction of multiple pedestrian paths and bridges, gardens, trees and landscaping, utilities, site furnishings, irrigation, storm water systems, and other enhancements.

(b) Parthenon Parking Zone. This is a 6.8-acre area immediately north and east of the Parthenon. Work included the development of new pedestrian paths, parking, an entry plaza space, events lawn, gardens, trees, landscaping, utilities, site furnishings, irrigation, storm water systems, and other enhancements. The supervising architect was Hodgson Douglas.

Phase II is the continuation of improvements to Centennial Park which we began in Phase I and focused on the Great Lawn. The improvements included improved drainage; modifications to the West End Avenue and 27th Avenue Entrances; improvements to roadways and sidewalks; additional paved paths in the Bandshell area and two new allees.

Each alle has extensive landscaping and masonry work. In addition, project also included a plaza with a statue to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the passage of the Women’s Suffrage Amendment.
